Intro

You wake-up in a small, remote desert town at the foot of the Andes Mountains. Packing-up the cameras and camcorders, you and your fellow travelers head out on a day-long trek into a magical and ancient landscape once traveled by the Incas. It is a place so radically different that your entire perceptual compass is thrown out of whack. As the day progresses, you probe, question and document your experience in front of this dreamlike world. Returning in the evening you download your media and discuss your insights as you unwind your body and your mind. Over the course of the trip you'll encounter ancient cultures, mystical landscapes, bewildering night skies and new ideas about art,
space, the landscape and culture.

Space Atacama Chile is a WVU School of Art and Design adventure art course in the Time-Based Art program led by Associate Professor of Art Gerald Habarth. Since it began in 2013, it has taken dozens of WVU students to the fascinating Atacama Desert of northern Chile, and to its capital city of Santiago. More information about the course.

“This course impacted me in more ways than I could have ever imagined. During this trip I grew not only intellectually and creatively, but also on a personal level. The Atacama desert gives you a lot of room to learn about yourself.”
