San Pedro

Location

Space Atacama takes as its base the small dusty, desert town of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. At an altitude of approximately 8000 feet, it sits on a high plateau on the northern edge of the Atacama Salt Flat, the 3rd largest salt flat in the world. Characterized by its clay streets and single story adobe structures, it has a population of about 4000. Despite its size, this tiny town in the middle of the desert attracts visitors from all over the world – mountaineers, adventurists, scientists, artists and photographers – who come in seek of its outstanding and unique natural surroundings. It is considered the archeological capital of the country, with a local museum housing thousands of relics from pre-Columbian inhabitants of the Atacama region.
